The ngultrum

Bhutan’s currency is the ngultrum (BTN). It is pegged one to one with the Indian rupee, and Indian rupees are widely accepted across the country.

Cash and cards

Bhutan is still largely a cash economy. Hotels and some larger shops in Thimphu and Paro accept cards, but many small shops, cafes and village stalls accept cash only. Carry enough ngultrum for souvenirs, snacks, drinks and tips.

ATMs

ATMs are easy to find in Thimphu, Paro and Punakha, and many accept international Visa and Mastercard cards. They become rarer in central and eastern Bhutan, so withdraw what you need before you travel east.

What is already paid

With Dhungkar Tour, your hotel, meals, transport, guide, visa fee and Sustainable Development Fee are included in the regular price. You only need money for entrance fees at monuments and sacred sites, drinks, shopping, personal expenses and tips.

Tipping

Tipping is not a Bhutanese custom, but many travellers tip their guide and driver at the end of the journey to thank them for good service. It is always your choice.
