Clothing

  • Layers: temperatures change quickly with altitude and time of day
  • A warm fleece or down jacket, even in spring and autumn
  • A waterproof jacket, essential from June to August
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip for the Tiger’s Nest hike
  • Long-sleeved tops and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples (see what to wear)

Health and comfort

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat: the sun is strong at altitude
  • Any personal medication, with copies of prescriptions
  • A small first-aid kit and motion-sickness tablets for winding roads
  • A reusable water bottle
  • Lip balm and moisturiser for dry air

Electronics

Bhutan uses 230 V at 50 Hz, with type D, F and G sockets. Bring a universal adapter, spare batteries or a power bank, and a small torch for farmhouses and early starts.
