Practical advice for Bhutan: temple etiquette, altitude, smoking rules, photography, tipping and travelling responsibly.
Etiquette
- Walk clockwise around temples, chortens and prayer wheels
- Dress modestly at dzongs and temples, and remove hats inside
- Do not touch religious objects or paintings
- Ask before photographing people, and never photograph inside temples
Altitude
Paro and Thimphu are at altitude, and some passes are much higher. Take the first days gently, drink plenty of water, and save strenuous walks, such as the Tiger’s Nest hike, until you have acclimatised.
Smoking
Smoking is not allowed in most public places. Tobacco brought into the country must be declared and is subject to duty.
Responsible travel
- Carry a reusable water bottle and avoid single-use plastic
- Leave no litter on treks or at viewpoints
- Buy crafts directly from weavers and artisans where you can
Tipping
Tipping is not expected in Bhutanese culture, but many travellers tip their guide and driver at the end of the journey to thank them.
